Maddox Jones, The Black Prince, Northampton
23 May 2021

Maddox Jones returned to The Black Prince on Saturday night for the venue's first live outdoor gig since coronavirus restrictions were relaxed. The singer songwriter had a busy 2020 establishing himself as a solo artist having previously performed in Born Stranger and The Departure. He released the EP Headspace last year and his latest single Can't Wait For The Summer is out now. It was great return for Jones who had headlined the Northampton venue last summer as one of the first acts to play a socially distanced...

Empyre / The Big Dirty, The Black Prince, Northampton
15 August 2020

Can't stop the (acoustic) rock. Northants rock duo Empyre and The Big Dirty became the latest NN bands to play on The Black Prince's outdoor stage on Saturday night. The gig was the latest of the venue's Garden Music series taking place while it can't use its main room due to the coronavrius restrictions. Great turn out for the gig, with everyone nicely socially distanced. It's obviously awful to see the impact which Covid is having on the music and creative industries. Northampton is really lucky to have...

Maddox Jones, The Black Prince, Northampton
18 July 2020

This gig by Maddox Jones was a bit of a significant one this. Recently, the Government gave the green light to outdoor performances. The gigs need to be quieter and still be socially distanced, however it meant The Black Prince could set about bringing live music back. The 200-cap venue has a huge covered back garden and a permanent outdoor stage and can comfortably fit as many outside with socially distanced restrictions as it can inside. Former Departure and Born Stranger man Maddox Jones was the first to...

Working Men's Club, The Black Prince, Northampton
1 February 2020

One of the best gigs from this year's Independent Venue Week was Working Men's Club at the Black Prince. The band is pretty unrecognisable from the one which opened for Bodega last year, shifting towards a far more electronic set up. The band's debut album is available to order now via Heavenly...

IVW 2020, The Black Prince, Northampton
30 January 2020

The Black Prince had a great run of gigs to mark this year's Independent Venue Week. Although I didn't manage to get to all of them, there I managed to see shows by SPQR, ROAM and King Purple. Here's a selection of photos from the gigs also featuring The Keepers, Skyflood, Superlove, Naked Next Door, No Music and Crawlspaces. For everything about Independent Venue Week, check out their...

Photophobes, The Black Prince, Northampton
12 October 2019

Phobophobes, The Black Prince, Northampton, October 12, 2019 Another great gig at Northampton's Black Prince, courtesy of London six piece Photophobes. I didn't know anything about this band before they were recommended by the promoter as one of those gigs to just get along to. Yo u can check them out over on Soundcloud. Dark, synth heavy weird rock and roll. Support by EGO and Naked Next...

Look Mum No Computer - The Black Prince, Northampton
2 October 2019

Sam Battle - AKA Look Mum No Computer - brought his UK tour to The Black Prince in what was an amazing night of electronic madness. Battle's set was part structured, part improvised and part controlled chaos all held together by an amazing self-built set-up powered by a - among others parts - a load of Nintendo Game Boys. Once Battle had finished his set, he gave fans the chance to get up on stage and have a go on the equipment themselves, to see how the plugins and patches all worked together. Not often at all you...

Rolling Blackouts Costal Fever, Esquires, Bedford
19 July 2019

Tons of hype be hind this show at Esquries and another which sold out well in advance of the gig. The Australian indie rockers released their latest LP Hope Downs last year. I won't lie, it didn't really do it for me but other were proclaiming it was going to be in the venue's top gigs of the year. Support by...

Black Honey, Esquires, Bedford

Marmozets, Black Peaks, Roadmender, Northampton
9 May 2018

Not a lot to say about this one. Black Peaks who opened were excellent. Headliners Marmozets less so. I'd seen Marmozets open for someone like Funeral For A Friend at some stage and they were great.  For some reason, they just didn't do it for me this time unfortunately. ...

Royal Blood, At The Drive In, Black Honey, Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham
19 November 2017

Having seen and photographed Royal Blood play to a couple of hundred of people at Esquires a few years ago, you can't help but admire what they've achieved. Their headline gig at the Barclaycard Arena was pretty special, sounded great and included a great live show. Along for the ride was post-hardcore rock icons At The Drive In and Black Honey. the latter who played Esquires last...

Black Honey, Esquires, Bedford
24 March 2017

Black Honey headlined Esquires in Bedford last night. Great gig and absolutely packed. The Brighton four piece are currently playing across the UK, touring in support of their latest single Somebody Better. These guys have some cracking tunes, full of pop hooks. Absolutely worth checking out if you can. For more information,...

Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Warwick Arts Centre
23 October 2015

The amazing Godspeed You! Black Emperor at the Warwick Arts Centre on Thursday. Besides the rear projection, they played in pretty much darkness, so this was pushing my D3s' ISO capabilities to pretty much its maximum. Pretty happy with the results. Having not seen the band for about 15 years, this was a pretty special...

AFI - O2 Institute, Birmingham
24 August 2026

It’s been a LONG time since AFI had played a headline gig on these shores – and even longer since I last photographed them. So, it was amazing to have them over in the UK to play at the Outbreak Festival and also a series of gigs across the UK. I don’t think I’d seen the band since their Decemberunderground tour in 2006 so to see them twice in two days was pretty special. Their latest album Silver Bleeds The Black Sun is their best in ages so it was great to hear tracks from it live alongside some of their...

Circuit Break Festival - Northampton
27 June 2026

The inaugural Circuit Break festival brought some of the best new alternative acts on the music scene to venues across Northampton. The new multi-venue festival featured gigs at The Black Prince, The Picturedrome, V&B and The Lamplighter. Dozens of bands headed to Northampton for the day – joined by some of the best acts from across the county. It was great to see such a good turn-out for the event and – from a snapper’s perspective – it was a huge success and a festival I hope to see return in future...

Yungblud - Utilita Arena, Birmingham
23 April 2026

It was a bit of an emotional return to Birmingham for Yungblud at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham. Having won the hearts of rock and metal fans over at Villa Park last summer at Back To The Beginning, the singer-songwriter was back in town on the latest leg of his Idols tour. And, needless to say, when his cover of Black Sabbath's Changes came around, it was clear emotions were running high among both fans and singer. Overall, it was an incredible set by Dominic Harrison and his band. It's kinda crazy thinking...

Bludfest - The National Bowl, Milton Keynes
21 June 2025

Black Country duo Big Special returned to Bedford for their inaugural all-dayer which saw more than a dozen acts play across the venue's two main stages, Joining headliners Big Special on the Main Stage were Grandma's House, Alien Chicks, Sounds Mint and KEZ. Downstairs in Room 2 were Enjoyable Listens, The Pill, Gans, Shortstraw, The Battery Farm and Tarmac. In recent years, Esquires has put on some great all-dayers - primarily its Ceremony festival. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - BP Pulse Live, Birmingham
15 November 2024

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds returned to Birmingham to headline the BP Pulse LIVE arena on the final date of their UK tour to support their latest album Wild God. Third time seeing and photographing Cave and unsurprisingly, he didn't disappoint. I went into this gig probably not knowing the new album well enough, but it was a great set. I was honestly, a little disappointed by Black Country New Road who were supporting. Love their two albums but live - I just don't think it translated. I'm limited to what I can...

Cropredy Convention 2024
8 August 2024

Cropredy Convention returned to Williamscot for Fairport Convention's annual three day festival. I could only attend the opening two days of the festival this year, however, still manged to photograph dozens of acts who performed. The opening day was headlined by Rick Wakeman and the second by Richard Thompson. Below is a bit of everything from the opening two days including: Rick Wakeman, Tony Christie, Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening, Feast Of Fiddles, Fairport Acoustic, Richard Thompson, Spooky Men's Chorale,...

Big Special - XOYO, Birmingham
9 May 2024

Black Country duo Big Specials played their biggest gig of their career at Birmingham's XOYO on Thursday, the night before the release of their debut album Postindustrial Hometown Blues. Having first seen Big Special open for Benefits a couple of years ago, it's great to see how far they've come. I'm certain their debut is going to be one of my albums of the year. Joining Big Special Birmingham's Gans and Fergy LHmaking while Foka Wolf and Tat Vision took to the stage for some antics which included a game of 'duck or...

Twinfest 2023 - Northampton
1 August 2023

Twinfest is one of the highlights of Northampton's music calendar and it was back for another year last weekend for four days live music at venues across the town. This year, The King Billy, The Lamplighter, The Garibaldi, The Charles Bradlaugh, V&B and The Black Prince all hosted gigs. Our visiting bands from Poitiers in France and Marburg in Germany were Electrik Girl, Hyll and LDMR. I managed to get along to a couple of the days to photograph Beings, Canyons, Pavilion, Beaucats, Hyll, LDMR, Elektrik Girl,...

Muse - The National Bowl, Milton Keynes
25 June 2023

Tens of thousands of music fans returned to The National Bowl in Milton Keynes for the first time in about six years on Sunday to see Muse. The band has been touring in support of their latest album The Will Of The People. Support was by Royal Blood and The Warning. The National Bowl has hosted some iconic gigs over the years (David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Green Day, The Prodigy) and it was great to see it full again. Hopefully, with MK Dons...

24 September 2022

Dozens of musicians headed to Northampton for the inaugural Town Takeover Festival. The multi-venue festival was organised by the pair behind The Scratched Record Podcast, Elliott Farrar and Joe Edwards. Hundreds of people attended gigs at The Black Prince, The Lab and at the Albion Brewery Bar. It was impossible to get around to everything throughout the day, but below is a flavour of the day. More photos of gigs at The Black Prince and The Lab are available on this site here, Prince - Lab. You can subscribe...

Chris Watson, Self Defence (Lee Irons) - The Lamplighter, Northampton
4 March 2022

Moons guitarist Chris Watson played a sold out solo gig at The Lampligher pub on Friday, joined by Lee Irons playing his first solo show as Self Defence. Watson was showcasing tracks from his forthcoming solo album. His new single Across The Sky is out this month. For Lee Irons, former guitarist in OhBoy!, The Depature and Forever Until October, the night marked not only his first solo show as Self Defence, but - as he explained mid set - his first live performance in about five years and his first solo show in about...

The Big Dirty, Swine launch, The Picturedrome, Northampton
22 July 2021

The Big Dirty and GiantDwarf have launched their long awaited video, Swine. The project has been about four years in the making and as well as the formal screening at The Picturedrome on Wednesday night, The Big Dirty were joined by Karl Phillps and White Raven Down who all played sets. You can check out the trailer for Swine here. It was the first full gig by The Big Dirty since they played an acoustic gig at The Black Prince in Northampton last year, photos of which you can check out...

Thumper, Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes
2 March 2020

After an amazing headline set in Northampton at The Black Prince last year, Thumper headed to Milton Keynes to headline the Craufurd Arms. Not the best attended show I've ever been to - but also, far from the worse! Fair play to Thumper for putting on a great gig regardless. Joining them were Northampton's Deaf Trap and Tragic who were both great. You can check out a few photos from the band's Black Prince gig...

Pixies, O2 Academy, Birmingham
16 September 2019

Alt rock legends Pixies headlining The O2 Academy in Birmingham. This was a super frustrating one to shoot - with the band almost entirely back lit for the duration of the show. Managed one clean pic featuring Black Francis and Paz Lenchantin. Pixies were touring in support of their latest album Beneath The Eyrie but their 39 (!!) song set dipped into tracks from across their career. Support was by Big...

Take That, Stadium MK, Milton Keynes
23 May 2019

Take That brought their 30th Anniversary Tour to Stadium MK in Milton Keynes tonight. Despite being down to three members now, it looked a pretty spectacular show with the band emerging from a giant black sphere in the middle of the stage. Along for the ride was Rick Astley. There’s a few photos below which were done for the MK...

The Lovely Eggs, Roadmender, Northampton
22 October 2018

It's been a cracking year for The Lovely Eggs with their latest LP, This Is Eggland featuring praise from fans and critics alike. Third time playing in Northampton I think, and first time on the Roadmender's main stage. The lighting last night was very red for the headliners, so photos of The Lovely Eggs looked best in black and white. Support was by Ill and The Len Price Three. You can read a review of the gig over on the Northampton Chronicle & Echo's website. The Len Price...

Bat Sabbath, Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes
10 June 2017

Cancer Bats kicked off their Bat Sabbath tour at the Craufurd Arms in Milton Keynes. Here's a few photos from the gig, as well as a review I wrote for www.northamptonchron.co.uk At some point, you’re going to have to accept you’re (probably) never going to see Black Sabbath again. Bat Sabbath are on tour in the UK throughout June. Yes, hiatuses and splits all too often just result in lucrative reformations years down the line, but in the case of the aforementioned Brummie heavy metal icons, the chance of seeing...

My Vitriol, Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes
8 April 2017

So, I desperately hoped this would be a good night. Unfortunately, it wasn't. When on form, My Vitriol are amazing, but this was far from it. I hate writing negative reviews, but it had to be done. My review which appeared on the Northampton Chron follows. On paper (quite literally), this should have been a great opening night to My Vitriol’s ‘Secret Sessions’ tour. Armed with a set littered with a mix of new and old material, the ‘nu-gaze’ alternative trio (more on that later), are back with their longest run...

9 October 2015

The Road Not Taken BY ROBERT FROST Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing...
