Esquires had indie rock royal in town this week when Blur guitarist Graham Coxon and his parter Rose Elinor Dougall brought The Waeve to the venue.
Without doubt one of the best – yet possibility underrated – guitarists of his generation, Coxon’s work with The Waeve is markedly different from some of the Britpop anthems he’s best known for.
I’d previously seen The Waeve supporting Noel Gallagher at Warick Castle a couple of years ago. You can see those photos here.
However, at Esquires, it was just Coxon and Dougall which made for a fantastic, intimate gig.
There was a great rapport between the pair who joked, bickered and laughed together on stage throughout the set.
Musically, The Waeve occupy more of a trad folk space and the couple played tracks from their two albums The Waeve and City Lights, Eternal EP, as well as a selection of unreleased material.
The night also included amusing chats about obscure guitar tunings (DADDAD) and foot tambourines! Support was by Wesley Gonzalez.
